Same Day Crowns
No matter how much you enjoy the warm welcome and gentle treatment you receive at John Ravera, DDS, there are probably things you’d rather be doing than sitting in the dental chair. Patients in the Newport Beach, CA area have the option of same day crowns.
Dental crown basics
Natural teeth have crowns that allow you to bite into and chew food. A dental crown replaces that portion of the tooth. This cap of strong material encircles a prepared tooth, reinstating your tooth’s function and appearance.
Dr. Ravera may suggest a dental crown for the following reasons:
- To restore a tooth with decay or breakage too expensive to be repaired with a filling
- To hold pieces of a fractured tooth together
- For protection of a tooth that has had root canal therapy
- To build up a tooth that is worn down
- For cosmetic improvement in a tooth with unusual size, shape, or deep discoloration
Crowns are also used to anchor a dental bridge in place, and a crown is the finishing touch on a dental implant, as a long-term replacement for a missing tooth.

How does it work?
We prepare the tooth to receive a crown and then we take a camera and we digitally scan it, and that image goes into the software and inside the software, we can design the restoration. We can design the color and the shape, and they’re also metal-free.
So, a lot of people that have an aversion to metal or if they have metal allergies those risks are greatly reduced. On the same day, we can design the restoration and then have it printed and milled.
It takes about an hour and 15 minutes, then the patient can come back and while they’re still numb we can place the crown on the same day.
What are the benefits
And for a lot of people, they’re very helpful because everybody seems to be over-scheduled and many people lead busy lives and they don’t want to make two separate appointments. They would like to be able to have everything done at one time, which makes their time management a bit more efficient.
How same day crowns in Newport Beach, CA are different
A traditional crown is an indirect restoration. The tooth is prepared, and impressions (molds) are taken chairside. Then, a temporary restoration (usually made of composite bonding material) is placed, and the final crown is fabricated at an off-site laboratory. That means you must chew gently on the interim crown for a few weeks, and return to the dental office to have it removed and the new crown cemented in its place.
Dr. Ravera uses contemporary Cad/Cam technology to create your crown from lustrous porcelain. This device uses precise information from digital impressions to mill the crown from a solid block of modern ceramics. The crown is shaded to match your natural teeth and is fitted and bonded, all in the same day if you like. You do not have to take time out of your busy schedule coming back on another day and you won’t need to be numbed twice. The quality and convenience of same day crowns is unsurpassed.
